MANGWE Rural District Council is in the process of introducing piped water schemes in Tshitshi and Ngulubeni wards at a cost of $100 000.
The project is being sponsored by the Department for International Development in partnership with The United Nations Children’s Fund (Unicef).
Mangwe Rural District Council acting chief executive officer Mr Johnson Sibanda said the project was a response to the 2016 Zimbabwe Vulnerability Assessment Committee (ZimVAC) report which showed that some areas in Mangwe were badly affected by the El Nino induced drought.
“The completion of the piped water scheme in Tshitshi ward is at an advanced stage and community members now have access to safe water near their homes,” he said.
Mr Sibanda said the project at Ngulubeni started on Friday and trenching has been done. He said they are now doing pipe laying.
“Materials for the construction have been delivered and the project is expected to be finished by mid-September,” said Mr Sibanda.
He said the project will benefit villagers who were travelling long distances to water points while some were forced to drink unsafe water from rivers and dams. Mr Sibanda also said the pipes will be trapping water from the borehole and there will be taps along the way where community members can access the water.
“The aim is to provide equitable, sustainable access and use of safe water,” he said.
In 2016, the Mangwe Rural District Council introduced a water reticulation system for residential stands at Ingwizi Growth Point as part of efforts to transform the area into an urban centre.
