ILL-TREATING her child by assaulting her with kitchen utensils and hosepipe landed a Chikanga mother in trouble after she was arrested in connection with the offence last week. Bridget Muchayaya appeared before Mr Langton Mukwengi facing charges of ill-treating her minor child as defined in Section 7 [1] of the Children’s Act. Circumstances surrounding the matter are that on October 20 the accused assaulted her nine-year-old son, Kudakwashe Mangoma for coming home late.
She assaulted him using a cooking stick, pot and a hosepipe. Ms Christine Mwenga appeared for the state. “Mangoma was assaulted by his mother after he came home late after playing with friends. She assaulted him using a cooking stick, a silver pot and a hosepipe. The boy sustained some injuries and a swollen face,” said Ms Mwenga.
Asked on why she acted in that manner, Muchayaya told the court that her son was troublesome. “He is a mischievous child. I am tired of his bad behaviour, Your Worship that is why I assaulted him. I erred, I thought I was disciplining my son,” she said. Mr Mukwengi told her that her form of disciplining the minor was unacceptable though she has the right to do so as a loving and caring mother.
He told her to treat her son like a human being. She will do 105 hours of unpaid work for committing the crime.
