Great Zimbabwe University Pro-Vice Chancellor Andrew Chindanya will today officially open the 10th edition of the Dzimbabwe Arts Festival in Masvingo.
The festival that started yesterday and will end tomorrow is being run under the theme, “Celebrating Ubuntu/Hunhu”.
Among the activities are academic symposiums which were held yesterday at the Herbert Chitepo Law School and talent search auditions.
A GZU band Team Fusion will entertain guests and the university’s Department of Film will premiere their movie, Solo naMutsai.
The literary and poetry segments will take place today at the Herbert Chitepo Law School before the official opening at 6:30 PM.
GZU information and publicity officer Anderson Chipatiso said the festival provided students and residents with an opportunity to appreciate culture.
He said a number of academics will present different papers on culture.
“We kick started our Dzimbabwe Arts Festival and we are celebrating 10 years after its inauguration. There’s entertainment and some lessons on the importance of our culture and heritage,” said Chipatiso.
He said the festival involves arts groups from Masvingo and beyond with the students from the GZU’s Department of Cultural and Heritage studies actively involved.
“A number of groups are showcasing their talents at various venues that include Masvingo Civic Centre and at our Mashava campus. The three day-event will obviously enliven the ancient city as there are a number of activities,” he said.
Established in 2008, the Dzimbabwe Arts Festival is held in Masvingo and seeks to showcase performances and productions in the visual, literary, culinary and performing arts and research.
It is a platform used by students and artists to share experiences and celebrate culture and heritage. The event was designed to enable Masvingo Province and its visitors to celebrate the region’s contribution towards the development and the preservation of Zimbabwe’s cultural heritage.
