A 21-year-old Kwekwe-based commuter omnibus operator has been sentenced to 12 months in prison for having sexual intercourse with a 15-year-old girl.
Terrance Mapuranga appeared before Kwekwe magistrate Mr Storey Rushambwa last week facing a charge of statutory rape after he had sexual intercourse with a Form 3 pupil.
Mr Rushambwa sentenced him to 12 months behind bars before suspending the other four on condition of good behaviour.
In passing judgment, Mr Rushambwa said Mapuranga acted recklessly as he was aware that the girl was under age but he went on to have sexual intercourse with her.
“There is always punitive punishment for this behaviour. You had knowledge that she was a minor though she consented, you should have taken into consideration the laws of the land,” said Mr Rushambwa.
The State led by Mr Freddy Ndoro proved that Mapuranga proposed love to the girl who is a Form 3 pupil at Kwekwe High School, and she agreed.
The two would meet and have consented sexual intercourse.
The matter came to light after the minor posted nude pictures of her and her lover on social media.
The pictures got into the hands of her parents who went and reported the illicit affair to the police, leading to Mapuranga’s arrest.
