A HONDA Fit overloaded with 12 passengers smashed head-on with a Ford Ranger along the Karoi-Binga Road, killing four people on the spot, including three children.
The tragedy struck at the 25km peg on Sunday evening, leaving mangled metal, screams of pain and heartache scattered along the road.
Among the dead are Juliet Matonde (32) and her three daughters, Eunice (13), Debra (8) and Letwin (3), all from Dixie Farm in Magunje. They never stood a chance.
Shockingly, the Honda Fit, which is only certified to carry five people including the driver, had 12 passengers crammed inside, some allegedly squashed in the boot like groceries.
The Ford Ranger also had seven people onboard.
A total of 15 others sustained serious injuries and were rushed to Karoi District Hospital. The bodies of the deceased were taken to the same hospital mortuary.
Police have since sounded the alarm on the growing menace of mushikashika drivers who prioritise profits over lives.
“Motorists must stop this reckless and illegal overloading. Innocent lives are being lost unnecessarily,” said national police spokesperson, Commissioner Paul Nyathi.
As the country mourns yet another road disaster, questions are being asked. How many more must die before rogue transporters are stopped in their tracks?
