In an interview on Monday, Mr Ngwenya said the collection of blood was part of a campaign to increase the adult blood donor base.
He said although most donated blood was used by adults, pupils donated the most.
“Adults donate 12 percent of the blood but use 80 percent. Pupils are the highest donors of blood, so we encourage adults to be blood donors as well,” said Mr Ngwenya.
He said there were more men than women who donated blood during the ZITF although he could not be drawn into revealing the exact figure. “During the ZITF, NBSZ was running under the theme “Accessible Safe Blood Used Right.” We had local celebrities such as Ndumiso Gumede and Sandra Ndebele encouraging people to donate blood,” said Mr Ngwenya.
He said the NBSZ stand was a hive of activity as there were educational programmes for members of the public on the importance of donating blood.
“I would like to thank all the people who supported us like the doctors who came to check on how we were doing at the stand and members of the uniformed forces who also donated blood,” said Mr Ngwenya.
He said a similar campaign was done in Gwanda and 64 units of blood were collected on Saturday.
