AT least 13 remains of fallen heroes have since been exhumed in Chipinge’s Nyazvikari area as the process to exhume and give decent burial to those buried in mass graves during the colonial Smith regime continues.
Four sites with more than 30 human remains of fallen heroes were discovered in Musikavanhu area of Chipinge. The sites, Nyazvikari, Munazvo, Muumbe and Mjee were discovered in the southern part of Musikavanhu. Chipinge District Administrator, Mr Edgars Seenza, confirmed the development.
“Human remains of about 13 bodies have since been exhumed in Nyazvikari area in Chipinge. The process is ongoing and we hope to conclude it soon,” said Mr Seenza in a recent interview. Chipinge, like most parts of Manicaland, was used as the entry and exit points by liberation fighters to and from Mozambique during the war of liberation.
The remains were exposed by the heavy rains that swept away the soil that covered them. Speaking at a review meeting held last Friday at the DA’s boardroom, National Fallen Heroes Trust co-ordinator, Cde Evelyn Makwambeni attributed the progress made so far to support received from the local community and other stakeholders in the district who assisted in cash and kind. Cde Mkwambeni urged well-wishers to continue supporting the noble cause ahead of the forthcoming rainy season.
“We are quite pleased with the progress made so far. It would not have been possible for us as a national team to achieve such great accomplishment without the invaluable financial support from the Chipinge community and beyond.
“We are confident that we will finish the process as soon as possible as long as well-wishers continue to partner us in giving our gallant sons and daughters befitting burials.
“Schools in surrounding areas have been visiting the exhumation sites where they are being taught the history of the liberation struggle. We hope this process will go a long way in educating youths about the historical background and identity of this nation,” she said.
Addressing those who attended the review meeting, Chipinge District Administrator, Mr Edgars Seenza thanked all stakeholders for the support that has been received.
The exhumation team has so far exhumed the remains of fallen heroes from areas such as Zvimba, Buhera and Chipinge.
