AT least $14 million is needed to rehabilitate infrastructure in Masvingo that was destroyed by heavy rains that pounded the province and the country as whole during the summer season.

In an interview Masvingo District Development Fund provincial co-ordinator Mr Marasa Gutukunuwa said the organisation was focusing on rehabilitating Chingami bridge in Mwenezi which was washed away in February and the project needed $40 000.

“We need $40 000 for the bridge in Mwenezi but all in all the province needs about $14 million for the rehabilitation of the infrastructure that was destroyed by the rains in February and March,” said Mr Gutukunuwa.

He said some of the bridges like Lower Shange in Zaka were washed away in 2000 during Cylone Eline and have not been repaired due to shortage of funds.

A special Cabinet committee was set up to mobilise $100 million to repair infrastructure that was damaged countrywide.

In Mwenezi the destruction of Chingami has cut links between villagers in Mativenga and Chirimigwa and is also affecting pupils learning at Rufaro Secondary, Mwenezi High and Makawire Primary.
