15 horses vie for honours at Borrowdale

Chronicle Reporter
IT’S a blood and thunder affair today at Borrowdale Racecourse when 15 horses lock horns for the prestigious Castle Tankard Grade (1), open series race. The race is on at 3:45 PM.

Fifteen top class medium distance runners from nine stables domiciled in Zimbabwe and across the border in South Africa will battle over 2,000M for the winners’ prize. The competition has been slated in as race seven on the card. Six more minor races all sponsored by Delta beverages through their various brands will be held as part of the supporting acts.

The first team to break the ribbon will get $30,000 while the second, third, fourth and fifth placed runners to cross the line will line up their pockets to receive $10,000, $6,000, $3,000 and $1,000 respectively.

According to the statistics released by Mashonaland Turf Club during this year’s edition of the Tankard race all eyes will be on Glorious Jet unleashed by Gokhan terzi who is the top dog.

Lucky Sam from the yard of Bridget Stidolp is another runner to look out for in this competition. Though this horse has been blowing hot and cold of late it still has what it takes to cause an upset. Fans will also be eager to see what Equina, the reigning horse of the year, will bring to the party.

Last year, Equina was in ruthless form winning the Castle Tankard, the OK Grand Challenge and The Republic Cup rounding up with the Fillies Classic Race. Only an extremely talented horse can achieve this feat. So far from 23 competitions he is a winner nine times and placing six times.

When on song Equina is a marvel to watch. However, jockey Ian Sturgeon must be legs on all the ways if the stable harbours any intentions of walking away with something this weekend. If fans are looking for that outsider who can send them smiling all the way to the bank then they need to look no further than Super Trouper.
