FIFTEEN people were killed in four separate road accidents in Norton, Chegutu and Mutare on Friday, police have confirmed.

In the deadliest incident, seven people died and 12 others were injured when a Nissan Caravan kombi carrying 20 passengers veered off the road and overturned along the Harare-Bulawayo road.

Three adults and an infant died on the spot, while three others succumbed to their injuries at Norton Hospital.

“In another accident which occurred at the 85-kilometre peg along the Harare-Bulawayo road at around 5.32pm, three people were killed, while two others were injured when a Chevrolet Trailblazer vehicle with five passengers on board collided with a Toyota Hilux vehicle with seven people aboard,” said the national police spokesperson, Commissioner Paul Nyathi, in a statement yesterday.

“The Chevrolet Trailblazer had allegedly tried to overtake the Toyota Hilux which was turning right.

“Subsequently, the Chevrolet Trailblazer hit the Hilux on the right lamp. The Toyota Hilux overturned before landing on its left side.”

In Chegutu, two fatalities and nine injuries were reported after a Toyota Toyoace truck veered off the road, ejecting passengers from the loading box.  “The bodies of the victims were taken to Chegutu General Hospital mortuary for post-mortem, while the injured are admitted at the same hospital.”

Separately, three people died in Mutare when a Volvo haulage truck with three passengers overturned and landed on its roof along the Harare-Mutare highway near the Wise Owl turn-off.
