15 matches, 31 points Hardrock hold nerve at the top

THE Castle Lager Premier Soccer League (PSL) title race is shaping up to be one of the most exciting in recent years, with Hardrock, Scottland FC and CAPS United locked on 31 points at the top after the latest round of fixtures.

Kwekwe-based Hardrock continue to occupy top spot courtesy of a superior goal difference and having played one match fewer than their closest challengers. The newcomers have amassed 31 points from 15 matches, winning nine, drawing four and losing just twice. Their impressive defensive record has been a key factor, with the team conceding only seven goals while scoring 24.

However, their mentor Kelvin Kaindu downplayed their title ambitions.

“For us we are a team that is coming from Division One and our first objective is to stay in the league (premiership),”said Kaindu.

“Scoring the goals and keeping a clean sheet, shows we are now stable. We missed Navaya(Washington) in the last two games and it was good to see him scoring. We are happy with the way we played and defended.”

Scottland FC, who have already played 16 matches, remain hot on Hardrock’s heels. The ambitious and free spending side has lost only once all season and boasts the league’s best defensive record, having conceded a mere six goals. However, a high number of draws, seven in total, has prevented them from opening a gap at the top.

Traditional giants and the league’s former Cup Kings CAPS United have quietly climbed into third position, level on points with the top two sides. The Green Machine have won nine of their 16 outings and remain firmly in the championship conversation despite an inconsistent run in recent weeks.

Just behind the leading trio are Ngezi Platinum Stars on 29 points, while Herentals College complete the top five with 28 points. Both sides remain within touching distance of the leaders and could significantly influence the destination of the championship during the second half of the campaign.

Dynamos sit sixth on 25 points with a game in hand and cannot be ruled out of contention.

The Harare giants have suffered only two defeats this season and could move closer to the front-runners should they capitalise on their outstanding fixture.

In the middle of the table, FC Platinum, Highlanders, MWOS and Simba Bhora remain separated by only a few points. While their title ambitions have suffered setbacks, a strong run of results could still propel them into the upper reaches of the standings.

At the opposite end of the table, the battle for survival is becoming increasingly fierce. Bulawayo Chiefs, FC Hunters, Agama, TelOne and Manica Diamonds are all fighting to avoid being dragged deeper into relegation trouble.

Triangle United anchor the standings with just nine points from 16 matches and face an uphill task if they are to preserve their top-flight status.

With the season approaching its halfway stage, every point is proving crucial.

The narrow gap separating the leading contenders suggests the title race could go down to the wire, while an equally intense battle is developing at the foot of the table.

Hardrock may be leading the pack for now, but with Scottland, CAPS United, Ngezi Platinum Stars and several other contenders breathing down their necks, the race for the 2026 championship remains wide open.-@FungaiMuderere
