15 percent decrease in festive road carnage this year

THE number of people who died in traffic accidents between 15 and 26 December declined by almost 15 percent from 102 last year to 87 in 2023.

National police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi in a statement on Wednesday, however, said the number of people who were injured in the same periods shot up by about 47 percent to 424 from 289.

He said 1 194 road traffic accidents have been recorded in 2023, an increase from 1 480 in 2022.

The festive season runs from 15 December to 15 January.
