AT least 15 teams are expected to converge at Zesa Munyati in the Midlands town of Kwekwe for the annual National Darts Association of Zimbabwe Champion of Champions tournament today. The NDAZ will host the first event of the year which has nine provincial champions and runners-up fighting for honours.
The event will mark its seventh edition and will see an improvement from last year when 13 teams drawn from seven of the country’s provinces competed for honours. Mashonaland West A Team Darts Club are expected to defend their title which they won convincingly last year. They received $500, medals and a floating trophy.
But this year the NDAZ said 10 teams will be knocked out in the first round and will get $200 for their sweat with $250 being set aside for the four losing teams in the quarter-finals while the losing semi-finalists will get $300 plus medals. Meynard Moyo, the association’s secretary-general, said all was now in place for the big event.
“We are expecting 15 teams to come for the Club Champion of Champions. Each team should pay a registration fee of $300 and players’ full names should tally with what is in the provincial records as well as national database.
“The teams will be in four groups that will battle it out with losing finalists expected to leave the tournament $400 richer plus silver medals. The best of 36 format is to be used but can be changed at the discretion of the top table or tournament organisers’ decision,” said Moyo.
