FIFTEEN members of the African Apostolic Sect (Mwazha) died while 20 people were seriously injured when a Mazda Bongo they were travelling collided with the Mercedes Benz Sprinter along the Harare-Nyamapanda Road on Friday night.
The accident occurred at around 11.20pm at the 205 km peg along Harare-Nyamapanda highway near Nyamuwanga Shopping Centre in Mudzi.
Police spokesperson Senior Assistant Commissioner Charity Charamba confirmed that 13 people including the Mazda Bongo driver died on the spot while the 22 injured were rushed to Kotwa Hospital where two others died on being transferred to Parirenyatwa Hospital.
Four passengers escaped unhurt.
Senior Asst Comm Charamba said, “The driver of Mazda Bongo was travelling along Harare-Nyamapanda highway towards Mutoko with 23 members of the African Apostolic Sect (Mwazha).
“On approaching the 205 km peg, the vehicle hit two stones as a result the driver lost control and the vehicle swerved to the right resulting in a head on collision with a Mercedes Benz Sprinter which was travelling in the opposite direction with 16 passengers on board. The Sprinter was also towing a trailer.
“Thirteen people including the Mazda Bongo driver died on the spot while two died were on their way to Harare (Parirenyatwa) from Kotwa Hospital.”
The names of the deceased are withheld because their next of kin are yet to be advised.
