ARTIFICIAL Intelligence (AI) is no longer a technology reserved for multinational technology companies and research laboratories.
Today, startups, universities, governments and businesses of every size are using AI to solve problems, improve productivity and create new opportunities.
As AI becomes more accessible, another important debate is beginning to shape its future. Should AI be freely available for everyone to build upon or should it remain under the control of the companies that develop it?
The answer could influence how innovation, economic growth and digital transformation unfold over the next decade, particularly in developing countries such as Zimbabwe.
Open Source AI and Proprietary AI represent two different approaches to developing and using AI.
Both have played major roles in the rapid growth of AI.
Open source communities have accelerated innovation through collaboration and knowledge sharing, while commercial companies have invested billions of dollars in research, infrastructure and product development to create advanced AI systems used by millions of people worldwide.
Rather than representing opposing visions, these two approaches each offer unique strengths and address different needs. Understanding their differences is becoming increasingly important for countries such as Zimbabwe, where AI has the potential to improve education, healthcare, agriculture, financial services, entrepreneurship and public service delivery.
Open Source AI generally refers to AI software, frameworks or models whose source code, and sometimes the model itself, is made available for others to inspect, modify and improve under specific licensing terms.
This collaborative approach allows developers, researchers, universities and businesses to build on existing work instead of starting every project from scratch.
One of the biggest advantages of Open Source AI is that it lowers the barriers to innovation. Students can learn from real AI systems, researchers can experiment with new ideas, startups can develop products without paying expensive licensing fees and businesses can customise AI solutions to suit their own needs.
Although the software may be freely available, organisations still need investment in computing infrastructure, cloud services, maintenance and skilled professionals to use it effectively.
Transparency is another major strength of Open Source AI.
Since the underlying code can often be examined, organisations are able to understand how systems work, identify software bugs, perform independent security reviews and evaluate whether AI behaves as expected.
This openness helps build trust, especially in sectors where accountability is essential.
Open Source AI also gives countries greater flexibility to develop solutions that reflect local needs.
AI models can be adapted for local languages, educational programmes, healthcare systems, agricultural applications and government services.
For Zimbabwe, where many digital challenges require local solutions, this flexibility provides an important opportunity to build home-grown innovation rather than relying entirely on imported technologies.
However, Open Source AI also comes with responsibilities.
Organisations remain responsible for securing their own systems, applying software updates, maintaining infrastructure, complying with regulations and providing technical support.
Simply downloading open source software does not guarantee security or success.
Skilled people and ongoing maintenance remain essential.
Proprietary AI takes a different approach.
These systems are developed and controlled by private companies that usually keep their source code, training methods and AI models confidential.
Users typically access these services through cloud platforms, subscription services or commercial software.
Commercial AI providers invest heavily in research, engineering talent, cybersecurity and advanced computing infrastructure.
These investments have produced some of the world’s most capable AI systems, helping businesses improve productivity, automate operations and enhance customer service.
One of the biggest advantages of proprietary AI is convenience.
Businesses can begin using advanced AI capabilities without building or maintaining their own infrastructure.
Cloud-based AI services allow organisations to integrate powerful AI tools into existing systems quickly, reducing technical complexity and speeding up deployment.
Commercial providers also offer enterprise-level support that many organisations value. Technical assistance, security updates, documentation, managed services and service-level agreements reduce operational risks for businesses that may not have extensive in-house AI expertise.
Another strength is integration.
Many Proprietary AI platforms work seamlessly with existing business software, cloud services, productivity applications and enterprise systems.
This makes implementation much easier and reduces disruption to daily operations.
However, Proprietary AI also presents challenges.
One of the biggest concerns is vendor lock-in.
Businesses that rely heavily on one provider may find it expensive or difficult to move to another platform in the future.
This can reduce flexibility and increase long-term operating costs.
Limited transparency is another issue.
Because commercial AI systems are usually closed, independent researchers and customers often have little visibility into how models are trained, how decisions are made or how potential bias is addressed.
This can make independent evaluation more difficult, particularly in sectors where fairness and accountability are critical.
Cost is another important consideration.
Subscription fees, cloud computing charges and enterprise licensing costs can increase significantly as AI usage grows.
Organisations should therefore evaluate not only the initial costs but also the long-term financial impact of relying on commercial AI platforms.
For Zimbabwe, both open source and proprietary AI present valuable opportunities. Universities can use open source tools to strengthen teaching and research.
Entrepreneurs can build innovative solutions designed for local industries and communities. Businesses can adopt commercial AI platforms to improve efficiency, automate routine work and provide better customer experiences.
Government institutions can also use AI to improve service delivery while maintaining strong governance and accountability.
Rather than treating these approaches as competitors, many organisations are combining both. A business may develop customised applications using open source AI while relying on commercial cloud services for specialised capabilities such as advanced language processing, cybersecurity or enterprise support.
This hybrid approach allows organisations to enjoy the flexibility of open source together with the stability and reliability of commercial platforms.
The future of AI is unlikely to belong exclusively to either open source or proprietary AI.
Both will continue to play important roles in advancing technology.
Open source communities will encourage education, transparency, collaboration and local innovation, while commercial companies will continue investing in cutting-edge research, powerful infrastructure and enterprise-ready solutions.
For Zimbabwe, the most important goal is not choosing one approach over the other.
It is building the skills, digital infrastructure, governance and innovation ecosystem needed to benefit from both.
By investing in local talent, encouraging responsible AI adoption and supporting innovation, Zimbabwe can position itself to take advantage of the opportunities created by this rapidly evolving technology.
Ultimately, the future of AI will not be determined simply by who owns the technology.
It will be shaped by how responsibly it is developed, how widely knowledge is shared and how effectively businesses, governments, researchers and communities use it to solve real-world problems.
