Chivhu Regional Magistrate Mr Tranos Utahwashe has sentenced Taringanashe Mbwera (20) from Sadza, in Mashonaland East province to 15 years in jail for raping a 104-year-old granny.

Mbwera was convicted on Friday last week after a full trial. Prosecutor Mr Mike Choto proved that on August 12, 2024, Mbwera went to granny’s home and entered her bedroom through the door, which was not locked.

He produced a knife and instructed her to choose between being raped or being killed but she refused.

Mbwera then lifted her from her bed, placed her on the floor and raped her once without protection.

She screamed, prompting her granddaughter, who was sleeping in another room, to come to her rescue.

When her granddaughter arrived, Mbwera was already gone. The granddaughter then accompanied her to make a police report leading to Mbwera’s arrest.

In mitigation, Mbwera said he was drunk when he committed the offence.
