18 suspected illegal immigrants nabbed in Benoni

Cape Town — Eighteen foreign nationals without proper documentation were arrested on the N12 freeway in Benoni on yesterday morning. Equestrian Unit members of the Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department spotted a vehicle “cramped with passengers in the goods compartment” while on patrol at around 08:00, spokesperson Chief Superintendent Wilfred Kgasago said in a statement.

The vehicle was pulled over and it was found that the passengers did not have the required paperwork, proving they were in the country legally.
“Seventeen males and one female (aged) between 17 and 40 from Mozambique and Zimbabwe were (booked in and) charged at the Benoni police station for being in the country without proper documentation,” he said.

The 18 suspects are expected to appear in the Benoni Magistrate’s Court tomorrow. — News24
