Cairo. — At least 19 people have been killed in fresh clashes between security forces and supporters of ousted president, Mohamed Morsi, across the North African country. The clashes broke out when security forces used tear gas, bird shot and live gunfire to disperse large crowds of angry protesters.
The casualties have been reported from the cities of Cairo, Alexandria, Suez, Ismailia and Fayoum. Similar violence has been also reported from Assiut and northern Sinai.
Security forces also rounded up a large number of protesters across the violence-wracked country. Demonstrators were joining rallies after yesterday prayers to demand an end to military rule and voice opposition to the new constitution.
The pro-Morsi group, known as Egypt Anti-Coup Alliance, had urged its supporters to stage mass rallies across the North African country.
Egypt has been tense ahead of Morsi’s trial and an upcoming referendum on a new constitution. Mohamed Morsi is set to go on a new trial later this month over a jailbreak at the start of the popular uprising against former dictator, Hosni Mubarak.
Judicial sources said on Thursday that the Cairo Appeals Court has set January 28, 2014, as the date for Morsi’s new trial. The developments also come as Muslim Brotherhood and its allied groups have also pledged to boycott the constitution referendum slated to be held later this month. — Press TV
