19 killed in Kenya accident

Regional police commander, John Mbijiwe said the 10 men, three women and six children were killed at around 1500 hours when the 14-seater PSV, locally known as matatu, which was overloaded plunged into a valley at Moto Quarry in Molo.

Mbijiwe threatened to take action against traffic police officers who might not have noticed the overloaded vehicle incase it went through the police roadblocks without being noticed.

“The vehicle was carrying 28 people instead of the normal 14 capacity. It was overloaded and those who died in the incident are 10 men, six children and three women,” Mbijiwe said by telephone from Nakuru.

The latest death toll now brings to over 40 the number of people who have been killed in separate road accidents in the past 24 hours to 24 by Tuesday evening.

At least eight people died on Tuesday night in two separate incidents, six passengers died on the spot after a 14-seater matatu rammed into a lorry transporting beer along the Meru- Nanyuki road while another three people died along the Nairobi-Mombasa road on Tuesday night. — Xinhua.
