A PUMULA Old man went from cash handler to casino casualty after stealing US$2 700 from his employer and blowing it all on betting sprees that ended in disaster.

Nkenya Mudenda (29) appeared before Tredgold Magistrate Evia Matura, where he admitted to stealing the trust funds from local food distributor Ansar Foods. His gamble landed him a 24-month prison sentence, with six months suspended.

Between June 6 and June 9, Mudenda was entrusted with collecting cash on behalf of the company. According to Prosecutor Nkanyezi Xaba, he was responsible for receiving and managing the funds on demand but instead, he pocketed the money and placed his bets on dreams that never came true.

The court heard that when the company, represented by director Mark Chitaka, requested the funds, Mudenda had nothing to show. He later confessed to blowing the entire amount on betting, hoping for a quick payday that never came.

“I just wanted to multiply the money,” Mudenda reportedly told the court. “I thought I could make more through betting.” Instead, he lost every cent.

Not a single dollar has been recovered.

Now broke and behind bars, Mudenda is learning the hard way that in the game of greed and gambling, the house always wins.
