2 detectives shot dead in Zaka

George Maponga-Masvingo Bureau

TWO police detectives were killed yesterday morning in a shoot-out with an armed robber in Ndanga, Zaka.

One detective died at the scene, while the other succumbed to his injuries on the way to Masvingo Provincial Hospital.

The detectives were allegedly shot by the suspect, Daniel Munyanyi, from Ndemu Village in Ndanga, who is still at large.

According to national police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi, Munyanyi is part of a gang of five armed robbers that police have been actively pursuing.

A team of detectives apprehended four members of the gang, but Munyanyi escaped after shooting the two detectives.

“It is unfortunate that our team of detectives from CID Homicide in Harare, who were tracking armed robbers, was involved in a shoot-out that resulted in the death of two detectives,” Commissioner Nyathi said.

“One of the detectives died on the spot, while another died on his way to the hospital.”

Comm Nyathi assured the public that the fugitive suspect will be captured.

“We will soon be releasing a full statement detailing what actually transpired, but we are appealing to anyone with information leading to the arrest of Daniel Munyanyi to contact the nearest police station,” he added.

“What we want to assure Zimbabweans is that, no matter what, the suspect will be arrested and will face the full wrath of the law,” said Comm Nyathi.
