‘Democracy does not work in a single way’

DEMOCRACY will flourish when it follows a country’s historical trajectory and no country should impose the concept on another, head of the Konrad Adenauer Stiftung (KAS) Department for Sub-Sahara Africa Mr Stefan Friedrich has said.

Mr Friedrich made the remarks while addressing visiting African journalists from eight countries attending a KAS masterclass on “Covering the World from Africa”.

He said the establishment of democracy in any country should follow its history.

“There are very different ways that a democratic society works and these ways are not uniform. It does not work in a single way. Here in Germany we have a strong federal system following our history.

“Establishing a democracy must take root according to the history of that country. Democracy will not work when it is imposed against a country’s history,” Mr Friedrich said.

Germany’s democracy, since the establishment of the federal republic in 1949, has worked through coalitions. It is considered Europe’s most stable democracy where economic progress emanates from consensus from various political parties and stakeholders.
