2 killed, 2 injured by robbers

Harare in separate incidents this week.

The incidents occurred in Epworth and Chitungwiza. National police spokesperson Chief Superintendent Paul Nyathi said in Chitungwiza, two men identified as Edson Choto (30) and Tatenda Makanda (age not given) were walking along a footpath near Stategos College to Zengeza 4 shopping centre on Tuesday at around 7.30pm for a beer drink.

“Along the way, they met three armed robbers who attacked them with metal objects until they fell down,” he said.

The robbers got away with a Nokia cellphone and US$7 cash. Choto and Makanda managed to walk to a nearby butchery where they sought assistance. They were taken to Chitungwiza General Hospital for treatment where Choto died the following day. Makanda was treated and discharged.

In Epworth, Harare provincial police spokesperson Inspector Tadius Chibanda said two men who had not been identified were found by a passerby lying in a bushy area at Giwa Farm in Epworth on Monday at around 7.25am.

“The informant was walking in the farm when he saw a naked man lying facing downwards and informed other people who were nearby,” he said.

Insp Chibanda said they discovered that the man had died and a few metres away from the body there was another man who was also naked and lying down.  The man was alive. A report was made to the police who went to the scene.

“They discovered that the body of the man had bruises on the face and right eye while the other one who was alive was bleeding from the nose and could not speak,” Insp Chibanda said.

The body was taken to Harare Hospital mortuary for post mortem while the other man was taken to Chitungwiza Hospital for treatment.
