2 killed in traffic accident

TWO people died and six others were seriously injured when a Toyota Raum they were travelling in veered off the road and rolled several times, police confirmed yesterday.The accident occurred on Tuesday morning at the 285km peg along the Bulawayo-Gweru highway.

Midlands Police spokesperson Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko said the Toyota Raum was travelling towards Gweru with seven passengers on board when the accident occurred.  He said the car was being driven by Matiyas Tapfumanei, 50, of Katanga in Norton.

Said Insp Mahoko:  “The driver of a Toyota Raum was travelling from Bulawayo to Harare. On approaching the 285km peg along the Bulawayo-Harare highway, the vehicle, which had seven passengers, veered off the road and overturned several times before landing on its wheels.  Two people died on the spot while six others were injured.”

Police identified the deceased as Shingirai Chidhindhi, 48, of Chief Mazvihwa, Zvishavane and Frank Nyoni, 37, of Dzivarasekwa, Harare.
“Shingirai Chidhindi died on the spot after sustaining head injuries and Frank Nyoni died upon admission to Gweru Provincial Hospital. The driver and six others who were injured during the accident were rushed to Gweru Provincial Hospital for treatment,” said Insp Mahoko.

He said the vehicle was now undergoing inspection at the Gweru Vehicle Inspection Department. Insp Mahoko urged motorists to be cautious and adhere to all road safety regulations which help save lives on the roads.

“I appeal to motorists to exercise maximum caution and stick to the stipulated speed limits when driving along the country’s roads,” he said.
