Government has so far reached out to 20 000 households in Chimanimani who were affected by Cyclone Idai, distributing food and non-food items that have been donated by well-wishers.
Chimanimani district Civic Protection Unit chairperson Mr Lloyd Kasima said efforts were still underway to ensure that all victims of the cyclone receive aid.
“We have managed to cover about 80 percent of the Chimanimani District in sending relief to the areas with the victims of Cyclone Idai that left most of the people homeless and without a point of start.
“This constitutes about 20 000 households who have received donations which have been contributed by thousands of people. Some of the areas have been made accessible by creating other routes that go around the destroyed roads and bridges,” he said.
Mr Kasima said they were giving people rations of relief twice a week to sustain households.
However, he said some of the roads that had not yet been restored were impeding the delivery of food to some communities.
“The remaining 20 percent of the population, we are yet to reach out to those areas because some are still inaccessible or it is still very difficult for large trucks to reach those areas,” said Mr Kasima.
Minister of State for Manicaland Affairs Dr Ellen Gwaradzimba said there is need for some of the funds being donated to be directed towards rehabilitation of roads to ensure accessibility of the areas that were cut off by the cyclone.
“We believe if some of the donated funds would go a long way if we direct them towards the rehabilitation of some roads which are making some of the areas inaccessible,” she said.
