20-year jail cut not enough: Gumbura

Court Reporter
Political activist Hopewell Chin’ono has petitioned the High Court to overturn the remand magistrate’s latest decision to deny him bail on the grounds of changed circumstances.

Already, he has gone through three unsuccessful court processes to obtain bail.

He now wants to appeal that magistrate’s ruling in the High Court.

Chin’ono has been in custody since his arrest last month on charges of inciting people to participate in anti-Government protests planned for July 31.

On Monday he was told he should remain in custody pending trial because he was a danger to society.

Regional magistrate Mr Ngoni Nduna declined the request for bail.

The lower court said the interpretation of Chin’ono’s tweets would be dealt with during trial, and upheld the State’s fears that the journalist-cum activist was likely to re-offend once released on bail.

The State is yet to respond to the appeal filed at the High Court yesterday by Chin’ono’s lawyers.
