OVER 200 000 households across Zimbabwe have received nearly two million chicks through the Presidential Poultry Scheme, while 6 000 households have benefitted from the Presidential Goat Pass-On Scheme since its launch in 2023.
More than 7 000 goats have also been distributed for free under the initiative, aimed at enhancing household food security and livelihoods by empowering smallholder farmers to boost their income.
With nearly two million chicks allocated, the programme not only supports families but also stimulates local economies by creating jobs in poultry farming.
According to the Ministry of Lands, Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Rural Development, a total of 1 987 861 chicks have been distributed to 198 786 beneficiaries, while 7 017 goats have been provided to 5 460 households.
The acting chief director of the Agricultural and Rural Development Advisory Services (ARDAS) in the ministry, Mr Leornad Munamati, praised the initiative.
“By providing free chicks to farmers, we are enabling them to increase poultry production and generate income,” he said.
He further emphasised the initiative’s broader impact: “By offering access to quality chicks and supporting farmers with training and technical assistance, we are empowering them to improve their livelihoods and contribute to the country’s economic growth.”
The Presidential Goat Pass-On Scheme targets smallholder farmers, particularly women and the youth, by providing them with goats to breed and raise for commercial gain.
Beneficiaries are expected to pass on offspring to new recipients, ensuring the programme’s sustainability and long-term impact.
