Prisoners gobble US$1,7m monthly

GOVERNMENT is spending US$1,7 million per month feeding prisoners due to overpopulation. Prison authorities say this is partly as a result of suspects with petty cases being remanded in custody.
There are 14 000 inmates in 68 prisons countrywide and officials say the majority of them are on remand.
This includes satellite and open prisons.
Speaking at a one-day workshop on ways to reduce overcrowding in prisons here yesterday, acting officer commanding Zimbabwe Prison Services’ Matabeleland Region Assistant Commissioner Claydon Seulah said the number of suspects on remand had increased and was straining the bud- get.
