LOCAL Government, Rural and Urban Development Minister Ignatius Chombo has suspended Borrowdale Ward 18 councillor Exevia Vengesai (MDC-T) on corruption charges and appealed to the Supreme Court against the reinstatement of four other councillors.
Clr Vengesai reportedly connived with a senior council official and procured stationery for the municipality worth US$44 000 from a company he owns.
Harare mayor Mr Muchadeyi Masunda has since launched his own investigations into the matter.
Minister Chombo wrote to Clr Vengesai on Wednesday informing him of the Government’s decision to suspend him.
He also notified Mr Masunda about the suspension.
Govt backs council on Rufaro deal

GOVERNMENT will not reverse Harare City Council’s business decisions made in the interest of ratepayers and the city in general, Local Government, Rural and Urban Development Minister Ignatius Chombo has said.
He was responding to a question on developments at Rufaro Marketing where the board turned council beerhalls into a real estate venture to be leased out to corporates, individuals and workers who have served the firm for over 20 years.
Most of the staff will be laid off.
TN Holdings is leasing 25 out of 130 beerhalls.

40 water bottling companies banned

GOVERNMENT has banned 40 water bottling firms for failing to meet safety and quality standards. This follows an influx of bottled water suppliers in response to a surge in demand.
Acting Secretary for Health and Child Welfare Dr Davis Dhlakama yesterday said only nine firms were authorised to sell mineral and bottled water.
“To date, 49 potential bottlers submitted their water for testing and possible certification. Out of these, nine were advised that their water was suitable for bottling.
