Defiant firms warned

THE Government will not compensate foreign-owned mining companies that could be taken over for defying the indigenisation and economic empowerment programme, a Cabinet Minister has warned.
Speaking during a feedback meeting on indigenisation and economic empowerment in Matabeleland South on Friday, the Minister of Youth Development, Indigenisation and Economic Empowerment, Saviour Kasukuwere also said the local financial services sector, which has been accused of not lending to locals, needs reorientation so that it is responsive to the needs of indigenous borrowers.
He said mining companies were making huge profits but were failing to plough back the proceeds to communities who are the rightful owners of the resources.
Minister Kasukuwere said the 51/49 percent share ownership structure was meant to reverse the colonial economic imbalances and to ensure that black people run the country’s economy.
“The Government will not pay anything to mining companies that we take over under the indigenisation policy. This is because 100 percent of the mineral deposits belong to us.
