Zesa rolls out prepaid meter project

Zesa Holdings will this week officially roll out the pre-paid meter programme that is expected to give total control over consumption to its customers and boost the utility’s finances.
The power utility recently completed its pilot project that saw over 4 000 meters being installed at households in Harare and Bulawayo.

Zimbabwe Electricity Transmission and Distribution Company managing director Engineer Julian Chinembiri confirmed the development last week on Friday.
“We are officially launching the programme next week and after the launch the meters that we have would be installed at the Zambezi flats in Mbare, Borrowdale and Highfield.

“The process will then move to other residential areas and we are beginning mainly with high density suburbs.

“We were satisfied with the meters we received for the pilot project and now we can safely carry out the project to benefit many residents,” he said.

Eng Chinembiri said the power utility needed US$60 million to install the prepaid meters countrywide.
He said Solhart had delivered the meters it was contracted to supply while the other three companies ZTE, Finmark and Nyamazela of South Africa would deliver them next week.
“The consignment from Solahrt, which is more than 6 000 meters was delivered recently and this is in addition to the more than 24 000 meters in store These would be installed on registered properties only,” he said.

10 city buildings condemned

Several high-rise buildings in central Harare have been condemned as unsafe or unfit for human use by the Harare fire and city health departments.
The departments say the buildings do not meet health and fire safety standards.

The buildings, the departments say, violate several city by-laws posing a danger to occupants and the general public.

The condemned buildings are Robin House, Dublin House, Daventry House, Stewart and Lloyds, Bush House, Roslin House, Msasa House, Mahachi Quardum Building, Winston House and Vivandelphi Court, a flats complex in Eastlea.

Most of the properties are high rise buildings and house more than 800 business tenants each.
The departments also came out strong against some buildings that have been renovated to accommodate restaurants and clothing shops.

This has also been blamed for the increase in accidental fires that have gutted shops in the CBD of Harare.
A furniture shop was recently razed by a fire where property worth thousands of United States dollars was burnt to ashes.
Informal traders also lost their wares when a fire broke out at a building in Belvedere.

Last week a restaurant was also gutted by fire suspected to have been caused by an electrical fault.
Fire Brigade Divisional Officer Mr Mark Kutyauripo said some of the buildings were shut during Operation Murambatsvina.

Let’s all contribute positively to peace — President

Zimbabweans must complement the security services in maintaining peace and stability before and after the general elections, President Mugabe has said.

Speaking at the 2012 President’s Medal Shoot Competition at Cleveland Rifle Range in Harare yesterday, the President urged Zimbabweans to be united and shun violence.
“Maintaining peace is not the responsibility of our security services only but is indeed the responsibility of all citizens. We all can positively contribute to peace and stability through our actions or inaction.

“Since we are preparing ourselves for elections, may I call upon all people to complement the security services in maintaining peace, security and stability.
“May I repeat my call on everyone to shun violence, all the time, but especially before, during and after elections,” he said.

President Mugabe, who is also the Head of State and Government and Commander-in-Chief of the Zimbabwe Defence Forces, said no one should take peace for granted.
“In peace time it is easy to forget and even take it (peace) for granted. Recent conflicts in the Maghreb

Region and Mali have vividly demonstrated the folly of taking peace for granted.
“The sudden eruption of war can result in untold suffering, destruction of life and a country’s fundamental infrastructure. Sad stories, caused by strife and conflict, should serve as stark reminders for us to cherish the peace, security and stability that we enjoy,” he said.

The competitions were held under the theme: “Sharpening skills at arms peace, security and stability”.
Turning to the competitions, President Mugabe said while the contests were sport, they were aimed at enhancing marksmanship.
