UN grand debate opens amid storm over US violations

Caesar Zvayi at the UN, New York
The grand debate of the 67th Session of the United Nations General Assembly begins here today amid a storm over the US’s continued violation of its host agreement in the wake of Washington’s denial of visas to 20 members of the Iranian delegation including two ministers.

Some members of the Zimbabwean delegation, among them ZBC chief correspondent Reuben Barwe, have been denied visas by the US embassy in Harare in recent years preventing them from covering the General Assembly without impediments as stipulated in the UN Host Agreement. Zimbabwe officially lodged a complaint with the office of the secretary general.

President Mugabe, who arrived here Thursday last week, is set to address the General Assembly on Wednesday afternoon.

His speech is highly anticipated as he has traditionally set the tone for the concerns of the developing world.

The Grand Debate, whose theme this year is peaceful resolution of international disputes, affords member states the platform to contribute on pressing global issues.

Farmers challenge Govt

Chronicle Reporter
LIVESTOCK farmers in Matabeleland have challenged the Government to split the agriculture sector into clusters and come up with a separate budget for livestock production.

The Zimbabwe Commercial Farmers’ Union (ZCFU) convened a Matabeleland Small Business Livestock Consultative meeting with Government and political leaders at Elangeni Training Centre in Bulawayo yesterday to map the way forward in the wake of threats to the livestock sector  particularly in Matabeleland where 371 000 cattle are at risk of starvation. About 500 have died in the province due to lack of pasture and water.

The union invited the Minister of Small and Medium Enterprises Development, Sithembiso Nyoni, to apprise her of their plight and to stress that they were also small scale businesses that needed equal consideration like other sectors of the economy.

Deputy Minister of Agriculture, Mechanisation and Irrigation Development Seiso Moyo, Zanu-PF National Chairman Ambassador Simon Khaya Moyo and Deputy Speaker of the Senate and Insiza Senator Naison Khutshwekhaya Ndlovu also attended the indaba.
