Computer Society appeals for legislation

Speaking at a press conference in Bulawayo on Thursday, CSZ president Mr Artwell Makusha said the Government should make it a requirement that every person who has to work with computers should have the ICDL certificate.

“The relevant authorities should make it a requirement that every person who is working in an office environment using a computer should have the certificate.

“It is not only school learners, who should have the ICDL qualification but education authorities and the general public should also have this certificate since we are in the computerised age.

“If more people made use of the ICDL programme, their IT proficiency levels would be raised; they would have increased confidence in ICT use; improve their job opportunities as well as provide themselves with an internationally-recognised qualification,” he said.

A committee member of the CSZ Bulawayo branch Mr Bongani Ndlovu said the Government should introduce ICDL to every teacher in the country.

“Some computers at schools are lying idle because teachers in those schools have no knowledge on how to use the computers. The Government should make it a point that every teacher has that certificate,” he said.

Mr Ndlovu added that making the licence compulsory would benefit everyone since we are now living in an information age characterised by high usage of digital technology.
