Temba Dube
BULAWAYO residents are likely to go without water for six days a week by Christmas as a third supply dam might be decommissioned in the next 10 days.
In an interview after a water crisis committee meeting in the council chambers yesterday, Bulawayo’s director of engineering services, Engineer Simela Dube, said the water shedding period would be increased if water from Mtshabezi Dam does not reach the city in the next ten days.
The council in a bid to conserve the fast dwindling water supplies, has introduced a weekly four-day water shedding schedule.
Presenting a water situation update at the meeting Eng Dube said a fourth dam, Inyankuni, may be decommissioned in March.
This would leave the city relying on Insiza Dam, as Umzingwane and Upper Ncema have already been decommissioned.
“The situation continues to deteriorate. Lower Ncema will be decommissioned in the next 10 days if we do not receive heavy rains. Although rains have started, we have been having light showers,” said Eng Dube.New probe into Samora Machel crash
