Sometimes actions somewhere affect someone somewhere. Nobody in Zimbabwe ever thought that the madness of Boris Johnson in pushing for Brexit will have a life changing impact on Zimbabweans sitting in Dotito in Mt Darwin or Kitsiyatota in Hurungwe.
The effects of Brexit drained the workforce out of United Kingdom living the industry bleeding to death in this world wide economic depression.
It costed the Conservative Party political strength with a lot of prime ministers losing their jobs. Starting with David Cameron, Theressa May, Boris Johnson and Lizz Struss..
Coming closer home Zimbabweans were given a rare opportunity to travel to the UK and fill the posts created by the exit of the Europeans going back to their own land.
People always believe that grass is always greener the other side. This idiomatic expression is used to refer to a change that is for the better.
People are never satisfied with their own situation; they always think others have it better.
This proverb is very similar although the meaning is slightly different. When we say, ‘The grass is always greener on the other side of the fence.’, it means that we always feel a little envy or jealousy for things that we don’t have. It is because of this envy many have made very wrong decisions.
In considering the issues of where you are, or where you would like to be, there is also a great tendency to think that the grass is always greener somewhere else. But we must realise that “The other man’s grass is always greener” said Pretty Kavs ” I had the opportunity to work abroad. I’ve been in the United States, I’ve been in Europe, but the politics and the way people behave was just the same the world over. Now I am in the UK. I sold my house and my car so that I could the visa sharks who charged me fifteen thousand pounds to get a certificate of Sponsorship for me and my wife. I only realised that I did not need to pay even a penny. It was too late. I then realised that the rent and transport is taking all I am working for. I got my leg in a bottle I can’t move.”
Every nation and culture has sayings and proverbs about covetousness. It is often said,’ The grass is always greener on the other side of the fence.’ There is a Scottish proverb which puts its point delightfully:’ The covetous man will never have enough — until his mouth is filled with mould.’ A Hindu proverb is just as vivid:’ If you mention money, even the corpse opens wide its mouth.’ There is a widespread recognition of the reality of covetousness.
Coming to the UK while it is an
Opportunity comes with both sides of the sword.” Have you always wondered what it would be like to live in another country? Perhaps you have been offered a job further afield and are trying to decide whether or not to accept the position. Moving abroad is a huge undertaking and shouldn’t be taken lightly, so it is important to weigh up the pros and cons before you make a final decision. People will always have plenty time to regret. Coming abroad is not always the solution. Many people were excited when they got the opportunity but it indeed was an opportunity to destroy your own roots. If you choose to move abroad, you must be prepared for excitement, hard work, and a lot of heartbreak.
It is only when you are abroad that you realise how wrong you have been. The difficult part of moving overseas is that you will have to leave friends and family. This can be devastating and often the most difficult part of the process. However, nowadays, keeping in touch is easier than it was in the past as you can keep in touch with loved ones through email, phone, and online video calling. At times you will feel quite homesick and lonely.
But the most problem is that diaspora does not meet your riches expectations. Not all who are in diaspora have hit gold. Some are struggling and many were actually better when they were in Zimbabwe.
Home is always best and we need to review it and have our minds focused on what we want to be and what we are.
There is no tree which has leaves made of pounds. There is sweating and gnashing. The best thing to do is to visit the country you have the opportunity to move to before you make the big decision. Do not destroy what you have built in Zimbabwe only to come to the UK.
Spend some time there and imagine what it would be like living there as holidaying in a country is very different from living there – there is more to life than sunshine and beaches! Remember that there is no wrong or right decision and nothing needs to be forever than your home.
“Moving overseas can be draining on finances. The cost of flights, and accommodation all add up will be an unnecessary if you consider home to be your final destination. The country you move to might have a higher cost of living than your home, and you could be worse off financially. Many Zimbabweans are seeing the pain of being abroad. However, moving to a new country can be very exciting and interesting. You will have a fresh start and have the opportunity to meet new people, see different scenery, learn about new cultures, try different cuisine, sports and hobbies. The country might offer better opportunities for you and your family’s future.
In all these we have the 2022 which broke the record by taking a lot of Zimbabweans.
Zimbabweans we must always know that Staying at home is the easier option. If you decide that you want to stay in your own country and make a life for yourself, there is no harm in that and no need to feel like you have “chickened out.” Being close to family, especially your parents and siblings, is a significant factor and probably the crux of the matter. Most people will choose to stay close to those they love rather than jet off to the other side of the world. Family is important, and we all need some kind of support network. If you are young and thinking about starting a family, it is comforting and nice to have family around so that your children will get to know their extended family. Knowing your environment and being used to everyday things such as food, sense of humor, tv shows, and language helps make you feel like you are part of something and comfortable – you are not the outsider trying to fit into a new way of life.
Zimbabwe has opportunities and we must explore them. It is hard to say this when you are abroad yourself. But experience is the best teacher. If your heart tells you that today’s struggle can lead to a better tomorrow, then go for it. Life is all about hope and sacrifice.
Staying abroad can bring a wealth of experience and a different perspective to your personality. Early age struggle typically leads to an appreciation of the smaller things in life.
Stay at home with parents is not really an option for a lifetime. Opting to stay with them once you have established yourself (or the other way around, they stay with you) is more respectable.
Going abroad is the beginning of a circle. One day it has to be closed.
The Circle starts when you first leave your Home Country to head overseas. You compare every new experience to how it was at Home. You therefore recall your Home often but only as a reference point, and you’re not in much of a hurry to go and visit it. And, you keep your trips there as short as possible. Home is clearly part of your past, not where you see your future.
You spend many years overseas acquiring exciting and enriching new experiences, and your time abroad just flies by. You are a completely changed person from when you first left Home. Its highly unlikely that you’ll ever go back.
And then, one day you find yourself thinking about your Home a lot. Every time you happen to visit, you extend your stay as long as possible to prolong the warm and comfy feeling. You pine for the food and the lifestyle, and your current location has started to feel alien. Perhaps you’re also worried that your growing children are not as versed in your Home culture as you want them to be. Home is now exclusively where you see your future.
Yes, you’ve reached the end of that Circle. It is time to pack up and go Home.
In 2023 we will see many more Zimbabweans coming back home. —Vazet2000@yahoo. Co.uk.
