A Harare teenager who impregnated a 13-year-old girl has escaped being sent to prison but will do community service for the crime. Munyaradzi Sikumva was 17 when he had sexual intercourse with the girl. Sex with a person below the age of 16 is classified as statutory rape in Zimbabwe.

Magistrate Ms Shelly Zvenyika sentenced Sikumva, now 18, of Ma tapi Flats in Mbare to 210 hours of community service.
Circumstances are that late last year, the girl consented to sex with Sikumva at the house where he lived, and she became pregnant.

The court heard that the girl kept the pregnancy secret until her sister noticed her condition as they took a bath                                        together.

She admitted she was pregnant and pleaded with her sister not to tell anyone else.
However, her sister reported the matter to the police leading to Sikumva`s arrest.

The girl indicated in her statement to the court that she became intimate with Sikumva with the intention of living with him as his wife.
Sikumva pleaded guilty and in mitigation apologised to the court, saying he would marry the girl.
