A 210-MEGAWATT thermal power plant is under construction in Norton, with the first phase expected to be commissioned in September this year as part of a US$600 million industrial investment.

The project, being undertaken by Chinese investor Bronxmen Industrial Park, is located on the outskirts of Norton under Chegutu Rural District and forms part of a broader industrial complex that will include cement and fertiliser manufacturing plants.

Mashonaland West Provincial Affairs and Devolution Minister Marian Chombo toured the site today and assured the investor of Government’s support.

She said the power project was set to transform the province into a key energy hub.

The industrial park is already operational in some sections, with tile manufacturing underway at Sunny Yi Feng, where more than 1 500 people are employed.

Bronxmen Industrial Park public relations manager Mr Youliang Xiao said the first phase of the power plant will generate 60 megawatts, with 40 megawatts expected to be fed into the national grid.

He said the project would significantly contribute to easing power shortages while supporting industrial development in the area.
