admin“We have decided to postpone this year’s race from this Sunday to May 19 because we also like schoolchildren to take part in this prestigious event. As you know, schools are currently closed and there was no way we were going to attract schoolchildren to come and race in this year’s event while they are on holiday.
“As this road race in an annual event on the National Athletic Association of Zimbabwe calendar, we have decided to hold it when schools have reopened so that schoolchildren get involved.
“We have also not sourced enough funds for the cash prizes as we have only managed to get a few donations from Doves Funeral Services . . . We are still running around looking for more funds which will enable us to hold this event without any hiccups,” Bezvo said.
The 21st February Movement 10km road race is the first sporting event to be organised in this country as part of President Mugabe’s birthday celebrations and has been staged since 2000.
The race usually attracts most of the country’s top middle and long-distance runners and its starting point is at President Mugabe’s former residence at New Canaan in Harare’s high-density suburb of Highfield and it finishes at Machipisa Shopping Centre.
