22 GOALS – 24 GAMES: Mushekwi turning back hands of time in China

former Caps United centre-forward is turning back the hands of time, defying the odds of age in the Chinese League One.

Nyasha Mushekwi joined Chinese League One side Yunnan Yukun FC in February 2024. That was after leaving Zhejiang Greentown in the Chinese Super League, where he spent five years.

And as it has become the norm, Mushekwi has been scoring for fun in the league. And on Saturday, the free-scoring striker was on fire as he scored a hattrick for Yunnan Yukun FC.

The League One log leaders beat Qingdao Red Lions 5-1, with the hattrick bringing his goal tally to an impressive 22 goals.

Yunnan Yukun FC are in pole position in the Chinese League One, with 54 points in 24 matches. Dalian Yingbo FC are the closest with 45 points on their tally after 24 rounds of matches played. With 22 goals on his tally, the 37-year-old leads the goal charts.

Juan Alegría of Guangzhou Evergrande is second on the charts with 14 goals under his belt.

Six games remain before the 2024 season ends.

How the season will end remains to be seen, but former South Africa Sundowns and Zimbabwe national team striker, Mushekwi, is without a doubt set for the Golden Boot in his maiden League One season.

Before joining Yunnan Yukun FC, Mushekwi excelled in the Chinese Super League.

He became the all-time leading goal scorer at Zhejiang Greentown after breaking the record set by ex-SuperSport United forward Dino Ndlovu. Ndlovu scored 42 goals during his two-year stint at the club before leaving to join Kocaelispor.

But Mushekwi surpassed the record after scoring 75 goals in 130 appearances, with six assists to his name, according to Transfermarkt.

For his age, Mushekwi truly punches above weight. — (farpost.co.za)
