At least 23 local, regional and international road construction companies have submitted papers to Government to bid for a tender to rehabilitate 16 major roads in Zimbabwe.This follows a tender notice from the Government in December last year seeking bidders to rehabilitate major roads which have outlived their lifespan.
The tender closes on Tuesday next week.
Secretary for Transport and Infrastructure Development Mr Munesushe Munodawafa, said the project will be run under the ‘build-operate-and-transfer’ arrangement.
“Government has so far received 23 bids for the floated tender and the projects have generated a lot of interest within the region and beyond,” Mr Munodawafa said.
He encouraged other road construction companies to come on board before the closure of the tender on February 21.
Most roads have outlived their lifespan and major rehabilitation work is required.
Zimbabwe needs about US$10 billion to rehabilitate its road network and Governement has been working hard to rehabilitate road infrastructure.
So far Government through the Zimbabwe National Road Administration has already started a big project to rehabilitate and widen the Plumtree-Harare-Mutare highway, one of the two critical highways bisecting Zimbabwe.
The US$206,6 million project should be complete by April this year.
The rehabilitation and widening of the highway is in line with Sadc protocols, whose implementation started in March 2012.
The road is being widened from the current seven metres to 10 metres.
Government has also commissioned a $68 million dualised section of the Airport Road in bid to ease congestion and create a direct link between the central business district and Harare International Airport. –ENDS.
