A TOTAL of 232 vehicles for the Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Service (ZPCS) have been commissioned as part of efforts by the Second Republic to enhance the operational effectiveness and efficiency of the institution.
The vehicles include 13 Security 10-tonne trucks, eight Security 5-tonne trucks, nine UD10 tonne lorries, 30 UD 5-tonne lorries, seven Scania 10-tonne lorries, one 30-tonne truck horse, six 64-seater Dragon buses, eight 36-seater Eicher buses, one Toyota GR Land Cruiser, two Toyota Prado XVLs,14 Toyota Hilux single cabs, seven Nissan Navara double cabs, 43 Nissan Navara single cabs, 19 Nissan NP300 pick-ups, two Ford Ranger double cabs and 62 Ford Ranger single cabs.
Speaking during the commissioning of the vehicles at Chikurubi Training School yesterday, Justice, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ziyambi Ziyambi said the provision of these vehicles is a clear testament of the Second Republic’s determination to improve the mobility and operational capability of the prisons and correctional facilities so officers can effectively carry out their duties as expected.
“This is being done in the Government’s quest and endeavour to enhance the operational effectiveness and efficiency of our correctional institutions in safeguarding the security of our great nation. This is a clear testament of the Second Republic’s determination to improve and modernise the entire transport system. Officers will be able to respond to any situations and incidents that require attention,” he said.
Minister Ziyambi urged the ZPCS to continue working hard on the prison farms adding that the provision of lorries will greatly assist them in the farming operations.
He challenged the users of the vehicles to judiciously guard them and put them to good use and maintain them regularly. Officers should serve the nation gallantly, remain patriotic and loyal to the current Government since building Zimbabwe can only be done if people jealously guard the gains of our hard won Independence.
Commissioner-General Moses Chihobvu said the provision of the vehicles is another step towards improving conditions and capabilities of the institutions.
He said words alone cannot express the joy felt by the ZPCS. “We are indeed grateful. The transport challenges were a characteristic feature of the ZPCS, but will obviously now be a thing of the past. This is being done through the cherished support of our esteemed President Dr Mnangagwa.
“Through his astute, visionary and illustrious leadership, we continue to record quite extensive and noteworthy developments taking place in the country. We can safely say the country is in the safest hands for development and prosperity to take place.
“Under the far sighted leadership of His Excellency, we have witnessed numerous reforms aimed at ensuring fairness, transparency and accountability within the justice delivery system as a whole,” Comm Gen Chihobvu said.
