Provincial leaders of the Zimbabwe National Liberation War Veterans Association (ZNLWA) this week met in Bindura and reaffirmed their support for President Mnangagwa and Zanu PF in the August 23 elections.
ZNLWA political commissar Cde Joel Mureremba said Zanu PF is a winning team which war vets, their children and widows are rallying behind.
All their minds and focus were now on garnering support for President Mnangagwa and Zanu PF for a resounding win. Cde Mureremba was representing the national chairperson of the association, Cde Christopher Mutsvangwa. He thanked President Mnangagwa for taking care of their welfare, adding that war collaborators would soon be rewarded for their contribution to the liberation struggle.
“War collaborators will start receiving their compensation soon after elections because if they get it now people will think it is vote buying,” he said. “As war veterans, we have suspended our claim to an increment because it pains us to get more money when our colleagues are yet to get their compensation.”
Cde Mureremba said they were excited to be in Mashonaland Central where President Mnangagwa said the liberation struggle never stopped after first shots were fired at Altena Farm in 1972. ZNLWA chairperson for Bulawayo Cde Cephas Ncube emphasised that the Presidential candidate for Zanu PF was President Mnangagwa.
“However, President Mnangagwa is not the only contestant. We need to ensure that all Zanu PF candidates win in constituencies and wards,” he said.
“We recently went to Mozambique and we came back with one key message of the reburial of fallen heroes and heroines. Soon we are going to Zambia to fulfill this message and we need representatives from all the provinces.”
Mashonaland Central provincial chairperson Cde Sam Parirenyatwa said war veterans were part and parcel of Zanu PF.
The leadership in all the 10 provinces gathered in Bindura as evidence that there was no disharmony in the association. “The President has proved beyond doubt that he has war veterans, detainees and collaborators at heart. This is the beginning of great things,” said Cde Parirenyatwa. “We want it to be known that war veterans support the revolutionary party. We are coming up with strategies to ensure that President Mnangagwa wins resoundingly.
“We are united together with our war collaborators, detainees, children and widows. We are the backbone of the party and we will ensure that the part wins because this is the party which can listen to our grievances.”
Cde Margret Sithole, who represents widows, said together with their children, they would rally behind President Mnangagwa and Zanu PF.
“Our husbands died in Zanu PF and for the country. We don’t have anywhere else to go except Zanu PF because they take our challenges to the President,” she said.
“No widow and child should suffer or lose their land and we urge all widows and their children to vote resoundingly for the party.”
Desire Kativhu, who represents children of war veterans in Mashonaland Central, said they were following the footsteps of their fathers.
In the upcoming elections, Kativhu said they had one agenda to campaign for President Mnangagwa and Zanu PF.
“Our welfare can only be tackled by Zanu PF and we will complain after the elections. We are working hand in glove with the youth league and the party structure,” said Kativhu. “We are here to support the revolution our fathers fought for. Zanu PF brought independence to this country and can liberate us from all our problems.”
