A massive clampdown on bus crews that flouted their route permits and timetables saw 248 crews being arrested countrywide last Saturday.
Most of them were fined while others are still assisting police with investigations.
The operation has been ongoing for some time but was intensified over the Easter holidays.
National police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi said: “248 arrests were made on the operation on enforcement of route permits and time tables on passenger public service vehicles, bringing cumulative arrests to 15 034.”
Asst Comm Nyathi said the operation would continue until there was sanity on the roads.
The Traffic Safety Council of Zimbabwe (TSCZ) and transport operators recently held a meeting in Harare with a view to bring sanity on the roads.
Among the issues discussed was the increase in road accidents emanating from speeding, negligent driving and overloading.
Transport operators pledged to encourage their bus crews to observe road rules and regulations, to handle passengers with care and courtesy, not to deploy unroadworthy buses and for the bus crews to cooperate with law enforcement agencies.
