TWENTY-FIVE Zimbabwean students have received scholarships to study various courses in China. Speaking at a farewell reception for the students, Chinese Ambassador to Zimbabwe Mr Lin Lin expressed his country’s commitment to opening learning opportunities for Zimbabwean students to study in his country.
“Every year the Chinese government offers educational scholarships to foreigners to study in China and this year we have awarded 25 Zimbabwean students to go to China and study programmes of their choice,” he said.
“The future of Zimbabwe and China lies in the hands of this generation and therefore students awarded with these scholarships should take this opportunity to do their best so that when they come back they can apply the knowledge they have acquired to help develop their country.” – The Herald.
New rank for students
A NEW commuter omnibus rank to cater for University of Zimbabwe students has been established, Urban Commuter Operators of Zimbabwe president Simbarashe Ngarande has said.
The rank, situated along Rezende Street and between Jason Moyo Avenue and Nelson Mandela Avenue in Harare comes in the wake of an increase in the number of UZ students robbed and assaulted by crews of unregistered commuter omnibuses.
There have also been an increase in students that have been robbed after boarding pirate taxis.
“There will be identification on all commuter omnibuses ferrying students to the university inscribed Ucoz in front and at the back. This is to ensure that if students have problems, it becomes easy for them to communicate with the operator.
The rank will act as a dropping and picking zone and will assist in curbing pirate taxis at the illegal rank along Chinhoyi Street. We advise all UZ students to use designated ranks when travelling to avoid previous incidents where they were robbed.”
Mr Ngarande said commuters from the eastern side of the city and on their way to UZ would use the Fourth Street rank while those from the western side would use the Rezende Street rank.
He said another motive for the rank was to have a central pick-up point which is convenient and safe for students. — The Herald.
Principal fired over child pornography
A PRINCIPAL of a high profile private school in Mpumalanga has been fired after being arrested in connection with an international child pornography syndicate.
The man, who cannot be named until he pleads, appeared in the White River Magistrates’ Court where he was released on R1 000 bail, a Sapa correspondent reported.
“Today, we have come up with an agreement to terminate his position in the school,” the school board announced in a statement on Wednesday.
The board said it regarded the allegation in the most serious light while respecting his constitutionally protected right to be presumed innocent until proven guilty.
The accused, who is an award-winning author, has been headmaster at the preparatory school for the past three years.
The board described him as a man characterised by exceptional professionalism, who also enjoyed the respect of his teaching colleagues, parents and pupils alike.
He is suspected of being part of a syndicate, which includes five other people across the country.
A total of six professionals have appeared in courts throughout the country for child pornography. The six included two teachers and a retired principal, a lawyer, a dermatologist and a businessman.
Police spokesman Lt-Gen Solomon Makgale said the accused were arrested in Lichtenburg, Bloemfontein, White River, Douglasdale, Florida and Potchefstroom.
They are all suspected to have been involved in an international child pornography syndicate, said Makgale.
Among the items seized were 672 DVDs, 22 memory sticks, eight laptops, two computer tablets, 39 external hard drives, and 25 books containing child porn.
The Times reported the case had links to Canada, the United Kingdom, the United States, Western Europe and Australasia.
It reported that children as young as five were believed to have been groomed to have sex with each other and adults.
The images were believed to have been generated overseas and local police — with the help of their international counterparts — were investigating whether South African children were involved. — Sowetan.
Kylie’s birthday gifts
It certainly paid to be amongst the over 150 guests at Kylie Jenner’s Sweet 16.
Not only were there performances from stars including Drake and Big Sean, celebrity guests and enough cake to feed an army, but the lucky few also went home laden down with gifts.
But while the estimated value of the party favours was over US$1 000, the Kardashian clan didn’t have to pay a cent towards supplying them.
Instead the reality starlet’s manager Kris Jenner enlisted Brand Placement L.A to stuff her sweet 16 birthday gift bags with goodies.
The privileged teenager’s luxurious favours were comprised of backpacks stuffed with gifts including Audiovox 808 headphones, iHome Bluetooth speakers, gift cards and more.
Impressively, only four of the items were directly connected to the famous family — Kardashian Beauty cosmetics, a PacSun journal, Glamhouse jewellery and Rob’s Arthur George socks. And according to the New York Daily News, the Kardashian-Jenner clan “didn’t pay a cent” for any of it.
Brand Placement also provided the gift bags for Kendall Jenner’s sweet 16 in November, but they were notably smaller than Kylie’s.
“The Keeping Up with the Kardashians” star is currently holding a Twitter contest giving one lucky fan a leftover swag bag and TMZ just posted pictures of the spoils.
Gift certificates for a Triangl bikini, salon treatments at Blo Blow Dry Bar, Ballasox foldable flat and US$50 at Karmaloop were also inside.
Also inside were MadPax Spiketus Rex backpack, NeffHeadwear beanies, Koolaburra boots, See You Monday hair turban, Fresh-Tops clothing and a JonesTShirts.com tote.
There were cosmetics and haircare from It Factor, Cake Beauty, Cover FX and an EOS lip balm basket.
Less exciting were the Duck Tape, Nika Water, Luggage Pros tag, and Emi-Jay hair ties.
Kylie’s rumoured boyfriend Jaden Smith, his sister Willow and “Glee” star Naya Rivera were present at the Alice In Wonderland-themed bash. — Dailymail.
