A 30-YEAR-OLD unlicensed driver from Gweru has been fined $250 for negligent driving and driving without a licence after he caused an accident that left his passenger with some injuries. Webster Tshuma from Ascot Infill Suburb in Gweru was fined by Gweru Magistrate Judith Taruvinga for driving without a licence and negligent driving.
Magistrate Taruvinga told Tshuma that negligent driving was a serious offence. “You committed a serious offence. ‘‘The complainant might sustain permanent bodily harm because of your negligent driving,” she said.
“You will pay a fine of $250 and in default 60 days imprisonment. ‘‘Six months are further suspended for five years on condition of good behaviour.” Prosecuting, Edward Gwainda said on April 10 last year at around 5AM, Tshuma drove his vehicle along Matobo road without a valid driver’s licence.
The court heard that he picked up a passenger, Rachel Kanyimo, who was going to Bulawayo. “On approaching the six kilometre peg along Matobo road, Tshuma lost control of his vehicle and it veered off the road and hit a tree,” he said.
“He sustained head injuries and fractured his left and right limb. His passenger, Kanyimo sustained a fractured lower limb as a result.” Gwainda said Tshuma was speeding and also failed to stop or act reasonably when the accident seemed imminent.
He also said the unlicensed driver failed to keep a proper look out because of his negligent driving.
