A total of 3 323 people have so far been arrested in Manicaland Province, with 244 vehicles impounded as the police intensify the ongoing operation targeting unregistered vehicles, operators offering public transport without proper licensing, and those breaching other traffic regulations.

The operation dubbed ‘Tame The Jungle’ is part of the countrywide blitz that seeks to bring sanity and ensure compliance with road traffic laws.

Stakeholders that are involved in the operation include the police, the Traffic Safety Council of Zimbabwe, the Vehicle Examination Department, Insurance Council of Zimbabwe, Zimbabwe National Roads Administration, Zimbabwe Revenue Authority, Zimbabwe Broadcasting Cooperation, Mutare City Council, Chipinge and Rusape Town Councils, among others.

Manicaland provincial police spokesperson, Inspector Norbert Muzondo said the operation came at the right time as some road users were endangering the safety of other road users.

“Since the onset of the operation, police in Manicaland have made 3 323 arrests. We have arrested 24 people, especially kombi drivers, for failing to display vehicle registration plates.

“When it comes to the mushikashika menace, we have made 1 453 arrests. We have arrested 244 drivers without road service permits, while 352 touts have so far been arrested.

“Another 1 250 people were arrested for various offences such as failing to possess radio licences and failure to observe road rules.

“About 244 unroadworthy vehicles were impounded. The operation is ongoing and we will continue to make arrests,” said Inspector Muzondo.

A quick survey on the situation in Mutare urban showed that most mushikashika have vanished from the undesignated spots they operate from.
