MATABELELAND North Province will take three athletes to the national cross-country championships in Kadoma on Sunday.
These are Phathisa Ngwabi of Hwange Colliery and the Tsholotsho duo of Brenda Banda and Saneliso Ncube. The province has been doing badly in national events because of poor funding and failure to have a co-ordinated athletics programme.
Bulawayo has 20 athletes going to Kadoma while Matabeleland South has 18.

Provincial athletics board secretary Enock Ngwenya bemoaned the timing of the competition.
“We usually use school children because there are few clubs in the province but we cannot do so now since it’s just the beginning of the term and most schools cannot raise the required funding.

“We are trying to engage the corporate world to support us for the upcoming events so that we can send more athletes,” said Ngwenya.
Meanwhile, Bulawayo Metropolitan Province athletes will depart for the championships tomorrow morning.

BAB boss Manuel Mpofu said they were ready for competition and had prepared hard.
“We are departing on Saturday and we expect all our athletes to assemble at Large City Hall,” he said.
