Three Chiweshe girls who drowned on Sunday in a fishing incident in Chiraire River were laid to rest yesterday.

Ruvimbo Mandaza (19), Gracious Masakara (14) and Lorraine Chasakara (14) drowned after slipping from a submerged rock.

Spokesperson Mr Clever Mandaza said the families were related and devastated.

“As a family we are very heartbroken by the triple blow since the girls were all related. Ruvimbo had visited her aunt who is the mother of Lorraine in Chigwada Village for a weekend out.

“While there, she accompanied her nieces to the river on Sunday for fishing. We hear that the girls later approached a side of the river where they slipped in the deep waters after stepping on a stone and rescue efforts by one of the boys who was among the team, proved futile,” said Mr Mandaza.

The bodies were later retrieved by members of the community.

Mazowe Central legislator, Cde Maxmore Njanji, assisted the bereaved families with coffins and food.

“We got assisted by coffins and food by our Member of Parliament whilst Chief Negomo’s wife attended the burial and also assisted the families with food,” said Ward 5 Councillor, Mr Edmore Mandaza.

Ruvimbo from Mukodzongi Village, was about to complete her Form 4 at Marongwe Secondary School, while Lorraine was in Form 2 at Nyakudya Secondary School and Gracious was in Form 1 at Chinehasha Secondary School.

Ruvimbo was buried in Mukodzongi Village whilst the other two girls were interred in Chigwada Village.
