A Mhangura family has appeared in court for stealing cattle worth around $800 from their in-law. Elisha Musvondo (51), his wife Tamari Mutowo (36) and their daughter Prisca Musvondo (20) allegedly stole two heads of cattle from their in-law, claiming they belonged to them.

The trio appeared before Chinhoyi magistrate Miss Brenda Dhliwayo on stock theft charges. They pleaded not guilty to the charges and were remanded out of custody to September 13 after magistrate Ms Dhliwayo considered that Prisca Musvondo had a four-months-old baby who needed extra care.

Generally, one beast attracts a sentence of nine years. Prosecutor Mr Eugiene Moyo alleged that on July 15, Prisca was assaulted by her husband Mr Joshua Takaindisa and she decided to go back to her parents’ home.

Mr Moyo said on July 27 at around 900 hours, Prisca and her parents went to Plot 54, Potari Farm in Mhangura, while the complaint Samuel Takaindisa was away and allegedly stole two beasts.

Samuel Takaindisa is  brother Jushua to and brother-in-law to Prisca Musvondo.

“They took one grey heifer, white faced with horns facing upwards and another brown steer with blackish colour on the neck and with horns facing upwards from the complainant’s cattle kraal,” he said.

The court heard that the complainant’s mother Mrs Locadia Dire tried to stop the trio, who reacted violently claiming that the beasts belonged to them.

Mrs Dire advised her son about the incident on his return and he filed a police report at Mhangura Police Station, leading to the arrest of the trio.
