adminKenya Defense Force (KDF) spokesman Colonel Cyrus Oguna said the accident involved a chartered civilian aircraft which was flying to Nairobi from Lamu at between 22:00 and 23:00 when the incident took place.
“We have lost two solders after their chopper that was hired by government crashed at Manda Island and one was injured,” Oguna told Xinhua by telephone from Nairobi.
The military spokesman said the ill-fated aircraft was headed to Nairobi city from Lamu when it developed mechanical problems and crashed a few minutes after taking off.
“The plane had 4 passengers — two crew members and two KDF soldiers and the two soldiers and a crew member died due to mechanic failure,” Oguna added.
He clarified that the ill-fated plane was not KDF’s but was a private aircraft which had been chartered by the military for its activities in the Lamu archipelago.
“Sometimes KDF outsources outside transport services which are very cheap and efficient. It was not our plane.
“The accident took place at about 10pm to 11pm on Monday night. The injured crew is receiving specialised treatment at our military barracks at Manda,” Oguna said. — Xinhua.
